Richard and myself left Saltaire at around 10:30am aiming to cross over Rombalds Moor into Ilkley, getting the train back to Shipley, and walking from there. Leaving Saltaire on the Leeds – Liverpool canal, we walked as far as Hirst Lock using the footbridge nearby to cross the River Aire and into Shipley Glen. Emerging from the glen on the road we crossed over past the farm and followed the path up to the top of Baildon Moor which although I can see it from my living room window, I had never climbed before.

After leaving the summit of Baildon Moor we headed down to the road and through the golf course before following a horse training track around to Weecher Reservoir.

Leaving Weecher Reservoir we walked briefly along a very busy road before heading out on the long walk up Rombald’s Moor, walking first along a wall before crossing through it and walking diagonally away from it towards the path joining from the Dales Way through a boggy section. We pasued here for a brew and to eat our lunch. Pushing onwards we came to the Twelve Apostles stone circle, were we fired off a few shots and admired the view to Drachs. We carried on for about 50m to get a photograph across Wharfedale.

Leaving the path here we headed out to the summit of Rombald’s Moor through the heather. I believe there is actually a path that runs along the escarpment. After reaching the summit we headed back towards the Dalesway, but dropped off the escarpment earlier and headed diagonally across the Moor to rejoin the path lower down. This proved an error as the ground was very wet in places here. On coming to a cafe we followed the road down into Ilkley. We went to the station to check the times of the train, making the 15:53 train with about 30 seconds to spare. This walk would have been around 10 miles long.
