This video walks through how to install a Windows XP virtual machine on MacOS using a piece of software called UTM, to play old windows games in.

Why?

  1. Some old windows games are just amazing and inimitable, if you are looking at my site, you probably agree already.
  2. From PlayOnMac to Parallels then Crossover, Apple finds a way of breaking my retrogaming approach. I have received a number of comments from people stating that DirectX errors prevent some games playing in Crossover on M2 machines and/or MacBook Pro.
  3. Unlike Crossover, and Parallels before it, UTM is free - though it may well be worth paying to download from the App Store to get automatic updates.

Prerequisites

  • Windows XP bootable ISO - preferably SP3
  • UTM application
  • UTM XP installation image
