    πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈIrwell Valley Circular Walk

Midweek circular walk in the Irwell Valley with Burnley Mountaineering and Fellwalking Club. Starting at Buffer Stops at the end of the end of the East Lancashire Railway. The route climbed along the side of Dearden Moor before dropping into Edenfield, under the A56 to the Irwell, before following the river and railway back to Rawtenstall through Townsend Fold. Like most commuting into Manchester from Burnley, I’ve driven through this route many times, but never walked in this area before.

    Walk from Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Post election walk with Alex Dave and Marc.

    Rombalds Moor

Richard and myself left Saltaire at around 10:30am aiming to cross over Rombalds Moor into Ilkley, getting the train back to Shipley, and walking from there. Leaving Saltaire on the Leeds – Liverpool canal, we walked as far as Hirst Lock using the footbridge nearby to cross the River Aire and into Shipley Glen. Emerging from the glen on the road we crossed over past the farm and followed the path up to the top of Baildon Moor which although I can see it from my living room window, I had never climbed before.

    A circuit around Corndon Hill

With Richard and Joe. A circuit of Corndon Hill, from by the stone circle, and taking in Roundton Fort. Played on the boulders at Lan Fawr prior to topping the day off with a pot of tea in the pub!

Ullapool and Dundonnell coastal road walking

Monday 16th May 2005 Paul and I arrived at Braemore Junction on the coach at 15:30. I believed that Corrie Hallie was approximately 5 miles from here, it is more like 10. We had planned to wild camp in the Fisherfield forest, but without going into the reasons why we did not, it was not practical, and approximately 2 miles before Corrie Hallie we hitched a lift to the Sail Mhor Croft hostel at Camusnagaul, which was excellent and I would highly recommend.

    Attempt on A' Chailleach

We set off at about 09:00 on the Sunday morning with the most honourable of intentions. We were in the blizzard with a wind on the tops of about 80mph, we decided to launch an attempt on the Monadhliath Munro of A' Chailleach. I don't think anybody that was with me on the Sunday morning would object to my opinion that with retrospect this was slightly over-ambitious. Andy and Jan turned back almost immediately.

An attempt on the Long Mynd

I picked up Sarah at about 18:15 on the Friday night and set off up the M6 and onto the M54. The plan was to take the country road that runs from Shrewsbury to Bridges, which I did evntually do after a detour northbound on the A49, but we did arrive in the end with sufficient time to devour a sirloin steak in the horshoes Inn. The hostel itself was great, if a little regimented, I had to wonder what might have happened to me had I tried to escape!

    The Glencoe Lochans

Had a good day today, had my gear on my back from 1100 to 1930, and didnt struggle with it. I escaped midge infested Kinlochleven at about 1100 and went for breakfast at Crafts and Things again. I walked the 2 miles down to the SNT visitor centre and bought everbodies presents. Then I walked back up to Glencoe, had a wander around to the MacDonald memorial before heading down to the Lochans.

    Rest Day in Kinlochleven

Not much to tell, had a well earned rest day. Had lunch at Nevisport in Fort William, had lunch in the Nevisport there. Popped down to the Kingshouse for a look around, and to the Tailrace again for tea - midges are still unbelievable.

    Rest Day in Glencoe

Did absolutely nothing today. The weather was abysmal, and the wrist felt worse! I did manage to cook (and eat) my dinner on the Trangia, and without being molested by midges whilst doing so.

    Day Trip to Fort William

Nothing to tell, wasted the day travelling to Fort William to get the wrist x-rayed. Went to the Clachaig and drank copious amounts of Burton Ale with some blokes from Lincoln who pitched next to us. Briefly considered doing the Aonach Egach with them on the Sunday.

    A rest day around Glencoe

I am surprised to say that I was surprised to discovery that Mitsubishi AAA batteries from Poundland are absolutely useless. I took just ten low resolution photos today, and the camera is dead. I will never cheat on Duracell again. Really didn't do much today, didn't intend to. Lay in, and wandered up to Glencoe for brunch at about 1130, and my right knee started to not like being extended! I was beginning to feel like a 1974 Ford Cortina by this point.

A walk through the Pass of Glencoe

Felt really frail again this morning, but got out the earliest yet. Decided to reconnoitre the pass today. Went for breakfast at Crafts and Things (again!) and then set off down the main road in the direction of the Scottish National Trust visitor centre. Went in and wandered around Michael Macgregor'sphotographic exhibition, which was pretty bloody excellent, before setting off into the abyss. I set off towards Aonach Dubh 'a Ghlinne, and had a good look at its West bank, but decided that Cameron McNeish's route looked a bit too steep for the wreck that I felt like.

    Walk from Glencoe to Kinlochleven

Felt like death when I woke up, so went back to sleep for a couple of hours, and didn't get up till about 10 o'clock. The torrential rain from the previous evening persisted until about 11 o'clock, which was better than the forecast. After briefly contemplating climbing I left for Glencoe at about 1130. I went to Crafts and Things again and had a pot of tea, and an absolutely awesome bacon and egg roll.

Walk from Glencoe to North Ballachulish

The weather was fantastic on arrival, woke up at about 0330 on the coach and watched the sun rise. I arrived in Glencoe for about 0930 but got lost. I walked about a mile towards Kinlochleven before turning back to the village. Check out the photos over the loch on arrival. By the time I had pitched the tent and had lunch it was about 1230, and I decided that it was too late to entertain a climb that day.
