I didn’t achieve anything like what I had intended today, I had hoped to do the Dodds and Helvellyn, dropping off at Grisedale Tarn. Not having crampons I was a lttle concerned by the possibility of there being some ice up high so opted to go for High Raise insted, lured by the opportunity to bag the tops that I had missed in February.
We had a decent enough day, and the weather was excellent for most of it. We started at the southern tip of Thirlmere and headed off along Wyth Burn for the for the col between High Raise and Ullscarf. Having set off at 11:15 for some reason we didn’t attain the col until 14:00. We headed on up, becoming disoriented at Low White Stones as we belived that to be the summit.
What did make the day a little disheartening was looking over to the Dodds and Helvelly knowing that the walk I had planned would have been on.
Realising our folly we headed off over to High Raise, and then turned for Sergeant Man. Heading directly for Sergeant Man we mistook it for Pavey Ark,and ended up just below Codale Head.
Once we were on top of Codale Head it was possible to see into Stickle Tarn and Easy Gully, and it was possible to position ourselves. Unfortunately an excessive amount of time had been wasted and we had to head straight down Easedale along Sourmilk Gill. After a little sprint in full winter gear, I arrived back at the coach at 17:15 – bang on time Miguel.
