⚽️ I’m struggling to see the difference between the Rhodri challenge VAR just reviewed and let go in Brentford v Man City, and the Lyle Foster challenge that VAR stopped the game for at Nottingham Forest, with red card and three game suspension.

⚽️ Watching Luton Gie it Laldy to Man Utd. Attack, defence!, relentless, team, heart - everything recent #burnleyfc performances have been lacking. Might not get anything from this game, but not for lack of trying - I hope they can stay up for that reason.

The least said about today’s match, the better.

It started badly, conceding 5 minutes into the game, but the first half was not especially insipid, with only a very weak looking (I’ve not watch again) penalty adding further.

The scene for the second half though was set almost immediately, with a third pretty much direct from the restart. As it pissed in through the roof of the Longside, Arsenal seemed weirdly better acclimatised to the Burnley microclimate of the two sides. I’m hoping the red artefacts on a couple of the photos do not mean that my iPhone died, along with any lingering hope of at least picking up some momentum in the back end of the season.

It got worse too, Ramsey stretchered off early in the second half with bits of one of his legs pointing in different directions to the rest of it. Safe to say his season is over.

Really difficult to find anything positive to talk about. Berge put in the usual shift in central midfield, O’Shea had decent patches of play, Amdouni managed to fall over and block an Arsenal shot. At least Jay showed a bit of fight when he came on - really hope that is not his last performance in claret and blue.

Can’t wait for this season to be over, but on that performance, next season might be just as shit.

Quick Preview - Power Platform

I’ve been considering the Microsoft Power Platform for a project that I have in mind for some time. While I cannot talk about that project here, I can talk about making things in the Power Platform.

I gave the platform a quick preview last night in the Coursera Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals course. I don’t know yet that I will be able to do everything I want in the platform (suspect that I can). What I can say at this early stage though is that I was super impressed at how quickly you can construct an application from a simple data source and deploy it to the mobile application.

Start to finish that took less than a minute - PowerApps did all of the lifting.

design teams may be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either:

do a design which maximises the layout and creates apartments that are safe and popular with residents, but creates a risk of major delays before work can start on site; or

do a risk-averse, code compliant design which has a reduced chance of delays due to difficulty with regulatory approval, but where the layout is inefficient and apartment layouts are unattractive to potential residents.

Excellent summary of BSA implications for HRRB design approach.

A ridewithoutstomach route on Rouvy, these are roads that I know well and love. Taking in the rustic coastline between the boardwalks of Los Arenales and Santa Pola, and continuing to the furthest extremes of Santa Pola, these are roads that I have rode on, run, and swam near on many occasions.

Beautifully filmed and perfectly synchronised by Bernd / ridewithoutstomach, it is good to see him back on Rouvy, and for non AR routes to be easily discoverable in the app.

A great 30-45 minute ride depending on ability, and as a flat ride perfect for recovery.

⚽️ Match Report - Liverpool 3 Burnley 1

Burnley travelled to Liverpool today for this afternoon’s Premier League encounter at Anfield.

Performances had been pretty abysmal since the visit to Aston Villa in December. Luton was bad, Man City was awful, and despite picking up a point at home to Fulham, that was awful too. So its fair to say that expectations were a little dampened heading over to Liverpool.

Burnley started brightly, and though Liverpool looked dangerous over the top, it was Burnley that had the better of the opening exchanges, Kelleher making a straightforward save from Amdouni. Jota put Liverpool ahead in the 31st minute, Trafford came for and failed to collect an inswinging corner, leaving Jota to head into the empty net. Not so dissimilar to the Luton equaliser 3 weeks ago.

Our set piece play has been dreadful all season, we can’t defend them, and we can’t attack them either. Somehow in first half injury time Brownhill floated an enticing corner across the box, which Dara O’Shea met, powerfully placing it in the top right corner. No stopping that.

Diaz put Liverpool back ahead in the 52nd minute, meeting a deflection from Esteve, who from now onwards will just be called Steve, and putting it beyond Trafford. I’ve not watched the footage back yet, but it looked like there was a foul in the turnover, after a lengthy VAR check for offside, unsurprisingly, the goal was allowed to stand.

Burnley created chances of their own to equalise. Fofana went through twice 1-1 with Kelleher. Opting for power on the first attempt, which Kelleher saved well, Odobert failing to get the rebound on target. The second attempt he chose finesse, trying to place the ball beyond Kelleher into the far right corner, but placing it wide.

Nunez wrapped up the points in the 79th, heading from an Elliot cross past Trafford.

I thought that the new signings all had good games. Assignon played well at right back again. eSteve made his first start, and partnered O’Shea well, before departing with an injury towards the end - hopefully nothing serious as he looks to be a really good acquisition. Hannes Delcroix started at left back, and I thought had a really good game too - he has improved hugely since joining in the summer. Fofana made his first start up front, and though he did not score today, he put himself in positions that our strikers have not been getting into this season. Berge had a good game in central midfield, and Odobert played so well against Trent Alexander-Arnold that the latter was replaced at half-time.

Brownhill, despite the assist looks ineffective at this level, and Amdouni is far too lightweight and fails to impose himself on the game. Trafford made some good saves as usual, but his indecisiveness had him in trouble a few times - he’ll be a great keeper, but is learning on the job in the toughest league in the world. Foster neither made the starting line-up or the bench, so hopefully with where he has bee to this season, he is ok.

🏟️ Anfield

Bucking the trend amongst many of their Premier League rivals to build soulless bowl stadiums, Liverpool have spent the last decade expanding and renovating Anfield. Located on the Southern end of Stanley Park, Anfield is a classic stadium of English football.

The completion of the new Anfield Road Stand takes the capacity of Anfield to a little under 61,000, with a record league attendance for the stadium likely for the visit of Burnley on 10 February 2024.

Probably the most famous stand in England, the Kop (12,850) sits to the South West of the ground on Walton Breck Road. The Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand (11,762) to the South East. The Main Stand (20,676) was extended in 2014 through 2016 to the North West of the pitch, and the extension of the Anfield Road Stand (16,000) to the North East is almost complete.

Around the Stadium

Visitor coaches park up on Arkles Lane. From there walk up to and along the Anfield Road Stand, the entrance is at the far corner. Continue round the main stand for the fan zone.

Match Program

Match program is £4 - pretty average for the Premier League. There did not appear to be any vendors around the stadium - the first stall I encountered was in a red phone box near the fanzone.

Food and Drink

The food and drink was surprisingly familiar. In Clayton Park Liverpool share pie suppliers with Accrington Stanley (and Burnley). £3.80 for a pie and £2.50 for a coffee is very sensible for the Premier League.

For accuracy Anfield serves up the circular formation Clayton Park pies, not the ovular formation served at the Wham Stadium.

The Anfield Road End concourse is pretty funky - in some ways similar to the Leazes End at Newcastle, though it’s really obvious that the upper tier has been built over the top of an existing stand.

The facilities were smart and clean too - much better than Villa!

Seating

Nestled away in the right hand side of the Anfield Road Stand lower tier, the visitor section is rail seating / safe standing. Given that nobody sits away, and my hip injury, I was quite pleased with something to lean on!

The lower tier rises on a shallow angle, so I managed to find a restricted view in a stadium without any - weaving from side to side to see past the beanpole in the seat in front. Also for a 3pm kick off in February, you will be staring into the sun first half.

Proper football that generates a decent atmosphere despite being full of tourists. They do turn the stereo up if you make too much noise in the away corner. We experienced quite a heavy police and steward presence, with some throwing out, for some reason. Thankfully there were no stupid fucking light shows like the karaoke disco at the Etihad.

Visits

10/02/2024 Liverpool 3 Burnley 1

👨🏼‍💻 Lessons learned designing my own Mico.Blog / Hugo Theme

What I would approach differently next time I build a Hugo theme from scratch for Micro.Blog, and future work on my 1987 theme.

For the first year of my existence on micro.blog, I customised existing themes to do what I wanted. First the Paper and Anatole themes, then Outpost, before settling on Tiny. Tiny theme is great, but despite all of the customisation, it became super popular quickly, and I felt that my site looked like every other site on Micro.Blog. So I decided to build my own ‘1987’ theme from ground up which I wrote about at the beginning of the year.

I’d been meaning since then to write a summary of the things I’d do differently, as well as further improvements I’d still like to make. So here goes.

Lessons Learned

Design

Before building my theme, I started off by building a html/css only wireframe. Understanding how Hugo themes are structured now, that is not really necessary. In future I would skip this step and just create the design direct in the local Hugo build, which will save time.

Development

I started off my build by grabbing a copy of the blank theme repo for micro.blog from GitHub. The blank theme does not contain all of the files that a basic micro.blog theme uses though, which means that I cannot replicate that functionality in my local build. In future I would grab the missing files, as well as replacing the partials for custom headers and footers - so as not to have to remove those things from my design to work on the theme locally.

Variables

This point follows on from the previous. In my next build I would replicate micro.blog variables within the config.json file, so that I could create and use them locally without overwriting the variables in my html. An example would be the subtitle and image that appears in the hero banner on the front page. These are hard coded, but if I wanted to design a theme for distribution would need to be dynamically populated. There is lots being dynamically populated in the theme, this comment is really about information that is held inside the micro.blog account profile.

Microformats

I knew very little about MicroFormats when I started my design, and I do not know a huge amount more now. What I do know though is that the absence of microformat classes within my html stopped the ‘on this day’ functionality from working at all. I wasted a day winding micro formats back into my design.

Luckily I did not write the conversation script, I think I borrowed this direct from Tiny - if I had, I might well have broken webmentions functionality in the site too.

Category / Page Titles

As category archives are dynamically produced I wrote a script that will inject a subtitle based upon the title of the page. It’s a small thing, but because some pages and categories have the same title, they have the same subtitle too. I could probably eliminate this by filtering more accurately, though that would need better understanding of Go than I have - I’m not sure that I really need to learn that. It’s all @ericgregorich fault, I have a big PowerApps project in mind and need to spend my time learning that environment.

Deployment

Deployment worked relatively well, I synchronised my repo from Github, and then added in the Micro.Blog features that were not enabled on my local build because of the points above. I did not know that if you install the theme as a plugin, you can auto-update it from Github. In future I would/will do this to simplify and minimise updates on a production site.

Future Work

To replace any statically populated content, reinstating the micro.blog / Go variables, and simulating the content of those variables in config.json in my local build.

Reinstall the custom theme as a plugin in micro.blog so that I can develop locally, and push updates to (and pull them from) Github.

I still need to update some of the archive page designs, I borrowed a little from Tiny as I had run out of time.

I’m not sure how much of my audience uses webmentions, reply through micro.blog/mastodon or by email. I’d like to investigate a lightweight comment system. Before looking into further I’m just waiting to see if the big forthcoming update from @manton negates the need for this.

I’d definitely like to introduce some form of pagination and/or taxonomy to the photos archive, that page is pretty big and long, and is a key feature (for me at least) of my site.

I might add reading time back into the site - at least for article length posts.

I’d also still like to explore customising the xml files to control how content is presented to micro.blog, and the wider fediverse from there.

Other than the above though, I’m pretty settled on my design for the first time. I’ve not felt the urge to constantly tinker with it over the last month.

⚽️ Burnley 2 Fulham 2

When we travelled to Fulham before Christmas, it was Burnley that emerged from a tight game with all three points. So we went in to the return fixture 6 weeks later hoping to get something out of the game. Expecting it, would be really pushing it this season!

That seemed well founded for the first 15 minutes of the game as we moved the ball around quite well, failing to take advantage of a couple of promising positions.

When Fulham took the lead in the 17th minute, that was probably against the run of play. Joao Palhinha rising to meet a poorly defended corner, his flick deflect in off Sander Berge. Our set pieces are appalling - cannot defend them, cannot take advantage of them. The weakness of both is more frustrating every week.

The second goal was a sucker, just 4 minutes later, Muniz beating the offside trap, lobbing James Trafford in no mans land. Trafford seemed to get a hand to the ball, just not enough to keep it out.

I’ve been struggling from a lower back / hip problem for a couple of weeks now, so much so that I drove into Burnley town centre to park nearer to the Turf, I was in agony, and we’d just capitulated again. It all felt pretty barren. To improve my mood further the next 40-45 minutes were awful, a couple of saves from Trafford keeping Burnley in the game. No urgency, no passion, no fight. Not hugely under pressure either, just passive, and far too lightweight in the moves up front. Very similar to the Crystal Palace game - it looked like we could play for the next week and not create anything.

For once the substitutions and tactical changes made by Kompany did not make things worse. Maxime Esteve replaced Hjalmar Ekdal at half time, giving the defence some of the height and physicality it misses at times. He had a good debut, as did Lorenz Assignon at right back. Assignon looked assured in defence making some key challenges early on, but critically he seems to have the delivery that this team so badly misses. In the 71st minute he floated a succulent cross over to David Fofana, who wasted no time putting it beyond Bernd Leno. Fofana would complete the comeback in the 91st minute, bundling over a cross from Odobert.

If I have a frustration, it is that we do not seem to implement what we learn in subsequent fixtures. Ramsay on the wing does not work at this level - he looks far more effective in the position Amdouni plays, Johann Berg Gudmundsson replacing him brought far more stability to the centre of the pitch. Amdouni neither holds the ball up, creates, or scores enough. Fofana added strength and power up front on Wednesday night, and he did here too - he should have been in from the start. We’ve missed that presence in the box since the unnecessary departure of super Ashley Barnes.

Positives though - all of the January signings look like they will really improve the team. Assignon looks a great acquisition at right back, though the weakness at left back will remain until at least the return of Taylor. Fofana and Esteve both adding power, strength and presence in defence and attack - Fofana feels like a young Lukaku in many ways. Our January business looks much more effective than the summer window, though sadly we do not own any of them!

Probably a fair result in the end. It was a game that we really needed to win if we want to stay up, but I think that boat sailed a little while ago. We need to finish the season in the right frame of mind to attack the next one from the beginning. If doing so puts us in with a chance of staying up, then great, but unlikely. I think Crystal Palace, Brentford and Nottingham Forest can all be caught, but only if we actually put points on the board.

Also really impressed with Luton Town’s 4 -4 draw away to Newcastle United. They are showing exactly the fight grit and determination that I want to see from Burnley - for me they will stay up on current form, and deserve to. Maybe we need to reflect on whether being a ‘very calm club’ is the right mentality for digging ourselves out of the predicament that we find ourselves in. Congratulations also to Anass Zaroury who’s assist in his debut on loan at Hull City helped to propel the Tigers into the play-off spots. Felt absolutely sick seeing him holding a Hull shirt yesterday, that one hurts.

Liverpool away next on Saturday 10th - sadly I have not been able to get a ticket for that game (which prompted my ranty article about premier league away ticket allocations. Unless that changes, I’ll be listening in from my armchair.

Until next time, up the clarets!

💭 I have a had a back/hip injury for over a week, in trying to find a way to minimise my walk to Turf Moor this afternoon noticed that Google have finally extended their 3D mapping to Burnley. Sadly Apple Maps have not, their 3D mapping is clearer with better functionality in my opinion.

#burnley

“I was told about this coming into the division, that ‘get ready, all the slight decisions, all the easy decisions, will go against you’.

Agree with this from Chris Wilder. It’s not just the big decisions that go against you, it’s that it sometimes feels like you are not actually allowed to even challenge for the ball in the Premier League.

⚽️ so disappointed to see Zaroury leave. He improved on Odobert last night. At least he got that rendition at the Etihad. Roberts also much better than a dreaful Vitinho, also away.

Little point looking for logic.

⚽️ Manchester City 3 Burnley 1

Easily the worst that I have seen Burnley play this season. We contained Manchester City well for the first 15 minutes until Alvarez put city ahead. Alvarez extended the lead from a quickly taken free kick while Burnley switched off later in the first half, and Rodri wrapped up the goals for City from the restart after half time. Ameen Al Dakhil provided a consolation in injury time.

Despite the nature of two of the goals, the score is flattering. We looked off the pace, second to every ball, unable to keep the ball. The first 60-70 minutes were dreadful. The second half began to feel like a friendly. Until the substitutions.

The introduction of Anas Zaroury prompted 7 minutes of the Anas Zaroury song. Non-stop. After an interlude for the Manuel Benson song we returned to it! Wilson Obobert has been one of the high points of the winter, but was anonymous here, with Zaroury introducing much more threat down the left wing.

Connor Roberts brought some fight to the performance. Literally. How Ederson was not sent off for dragging him across the pitch in a headlock, I’ve no idea. VAR, fucking pointless.

Fofana. Considering that he is self professed to be lazy and not like running, he ran with strength and power, but with finesse and ball control. Much more weight and fight up front. I’d hoped Obafemi might provide this, but he has gone out to Milwall on loan. He lined up the cross which resulted in the Burnley goal.

A final mention for Han Noah Massenho, who was given around 10 minutes for his premier league debut, and looked competent and not out of place.

I hope that we learn from that final spell, and bring the same fight and spirit to the remainder of the season.

🏟️ Etihad Stadium

The Etihad Stadium in Manchester is the home of Manchester City FC. Originally built as an athletics stadium for the Commonwealth Games held in the city in 2002, the stadium was extended in 2014 to a capacity of 53,400, and is due to be expanded again to 60,000 over the next few years.

I have visited the stadium before, prior to the expansion, for a Foo Fighters gig in the early 2010s.

The match program is £4, par in the Premier League.

The catering was pretty good really. £11.50 bought me a huge Southern Fried Chicken and BBQ sauce wrap, a packet of crisps and a bovril. Slightly cheaper than the London clubs, but definitely not competing with the wonder that is the Wham Stadium.

Probably the most impressive bowl stadium that I’ve visited, it really is like sitting in a theatre. The atmosphere is dreadful though and City have really overplayed the choreography. Reminding their fans of each of their songs about their team prior to kick off. It’s a really impressive structure, for a library.
