I went into the Parkrun today feeling a lot fitter, lighter and quicker following a good long hillrun with Deeside Runners on Tuesday in which the quick crowd pummelled me into the hillside in an interval session at Glen Tanar.
I started off the race holding onto 6:30 min/mile pace, holding onto that until well after the first turn. The pace slipped into the low 7:00 min/miles by the end of the fist mile with the average pace slowly creeping up towards 7:25 min/mile.
The weather was lovely today with a clear sunny view out to sea across the beach, and a coll breeze blowing across. Dropping down onto the lower esplanade we lost the breeze, and it warmed up considerably, although I wouldn´t go so far as to say that it affected my pace, which was fairly consistent after the first mile or so. I started off holding onto the leading group for some time, and although inevitably I fell back I was pulling away from the pack behind, and for a nice change did actually overtake somebody heading into the final turn before the finish.
I finished the race in 23:03, taking a full minute off my previous PB for the distance, set at the same race the week prior. I´m competing in this race again next Saturday, and think that it is possible for me to take another 30 seconds to a minute out of my PB, particularly if I push on along the home straight. Time will tell, but I will be seeking to average out a near 7 minute miles, which I should be able to hold onto over 5K, finishing in between 21:30 and 22:30, with the latter obviously nearer to my sights.
After the race I met up with Andy, who had run a good 3 minutes or so inside his time from last week, and headed over to the cafe at Stratosphere for a brew and half a muffin each. I´m very excited about coming back next week to have another pop at my time.
